Practical Driving Test
On the day of your practical driving test, you will be required to provide the following to your examiner:
• your appointment letter• both parts of your licence
• if you have an old fashioned paper licence you must also take your passport
• your theory test pass certificate
If you do not take all these items to the test centre you may not be able to take your test and you will lose your fee.
You can book your practical test online, by phone on 0300 200 1122 or your Class Manoeuvres Instructor can take care of it for you.
In order to book a practical driving test, you will need:
• your valid UK licence
• your theory test certificate reference
• a valid debit or credit card for payment
The current cost of booking a test is £62.00 on weekdays or £75 for evening and weekend tests.
The driving test is straight forward and has been designed to test if you can drive safely and whether you can implement the relevant highway code knowledge into your driving.
Your driving instructor will have put you through several mock driving tests so you are prepared and know what to expect.
At the beginning of the test you will have an eyesight test – you will be asked to read a car number plate that is a certain distance away. You will then be asked two vehicle safety questions.
If you pass your eyesight test, it's on to the practical and you will be now be assessed on every aspect of your driving. You will be required to performtwo reversing exercises and an emergency stop.
While taking your test, the examiner will give you spoken directions which you must follow. The route will encompass typical road and traffic conditions and you will be asked to do certain exercises as mentioned above. You are allowed up to 15 minor faults – 16 and over and you will fail. If you make just 1major fault you will fail. If the examiner feels you are a danger on the roads he will stop the test and you will fail. Overall the examiner is looking for a good standard of safe driving.
Once the test comes to an end the examiner will tell you if you have passed or failed and can provide feedback if requested.
If you have passed, your examiner can scan your photocard licence (if issued after 1st March 2004) and send the details direct to the DVLA who will automatically issue you with your full driving licence. Your examiner will also give you a pass certificate.
If you have a licence issued before 1st March 2004 look on the back of your pass certificate for instructions on what to do next – which is sending your licence and the appropriate fee to the DVLA for your new full licence.
If you fail you will need to leave 10 working days before you can re-take your test.
